J. Lloyd Andrews

J. Lloyd Andrews, 90, of Roanoke Rapids, died on Saturday, March 9, 2019, with his loving family by his side.

A lifelong resident of Roanoke Rapids, he was the son of the late Junious Lloyd Andrews, Sr. and Mary Vick Andrews. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Connie Cole Andrews; his sisters, Helen Jenkins and Frances Crouch, and his brothers, David Andrews and Graham Andrews.

Lloyd was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, Class of 1947. He served in the Army National Guard from 1951 to 1954.

He was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church and was a past Deacon. He held numerous positions during his 41 years with Dominion Energy, formerly VEPCO, including a major role in the acquisition of land that would be flooded to become Lake Gaston, and retired in 1988 as Station Manager of the Roanoke Rapids and Gaston Power Stations.

His love for the city of Roanoke Rapids was evident through his many years of civic service and community involvement. Lloyd was elected to the Roanoke Rapids City Council in 1963, and was appointed as Mayor Pro-Tem from 1968 to 1983. He was elected Mayor in 1983 and held that position until he decided not to pursue reelection in 1993.

He was a Master Mason for 64 years with the Widow's Son Lodge, Sudan Temple, New Bern, NC. His civic contributions included participation on the Roanoke Rapids Exchange Club Board of Directors, Roanoke Rapids Youth Fellowship, Halifax County Economic Development Commission, and the State and Local Action Committee of the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce. He was Past President of the Lake Gaston Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Executive Committee for Region L Council of Governments.

Lloyd is survived by his daughter, Susan Andrews Doughtie and her husband, Mike, of Littleton; his granddaughters, Ashley D. Smiley and her husband, Matt, of Glen Allen, Virginia, and Lauren Doughtie of Suffolk, Virginia; his great-grandson, Hudson Smiley; his great-granddaughter, Anne Reese Smiley; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services to celebrate Lloyd's life will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Dr. Layne Wallace and Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Masonic Rites.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 12, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
